Air pollution is steadily increasing in many cities worldwide, alongside the growing impacts of climate change. Dhaka, a megacity, has long struggled with severe air pollution. For an extended period, Dhaka has consistently ranked among the world’s most polluted cities. However, in recent days, the city’s air quality has shown some improvement.

According to the international air quality monitoring organization IQAir, as of 9:30 AM on Sunday (June 22), Dhaka ranked 19th among the world’s most polluted cities, with an air quality index (AQI) score of 81. This score is considered to indicate moderate air pollution.

At the same time, Kampala, the capital of Uganda, topped the list with a score of 171. Pakistan’s Lahore held second place with the same score, followed by Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia, with a score of 160. Dubai, United Arab Emirates, ranked fourth with a score of 151, and Santiago, the capital of Chile, was in fifth place with a score of 149.

Generally, an AQI score between 0 and 50 is considered good, while scores between 51 and 100 indicate moderate air quality. Scores from 101 to 150 are seen as unhealthy for sensitive groups. Air is categorized as “unhealthy” when the AQI ranges from 151 to 200. When the index ranges from 201 to 300, the air is deemed “very unhealthy,” and health experts advise children, the elderly, and people with medical conditions to stay indoors while others are recommended to limit outdoor activities. AQI scores between 301 and 400 are classified as “hazardous,” posing serious health risks to city residents.
