The ordinance to merge seven government colleges in the capital into ‘Dhaka Central University’ has been approved by the Advisory Council, ending a long period of protests, hardships, and waiting.
Education Advisor Professor Chowdhury Rafiqul Abrar (C R Abrar) personally shared the news with students over the phone on Thursday (January 22) noon.
When the news reached protesting students gathered in front of Dhaka College around 2 pm, they erupted in cheers, chanting slogans in favor of ‘Dhaka Central University’. Students hugged each other, celebrating the fulfillment of their long-standing demand.
The controversy surrounding the seven colleges began in 2017 when they were affiliated with the University of Dhaka without proper preparation. The seven colleges are Dhaka College, Eden Women’s College, Begum Badrunnesa Women’s College, Shahid Sohrawardy College, Kabi Nazrul College, Government Bangla College, and Titumir College.
