Autopsy Finds No Injury Marks on Journalist Bibhuranjan Sarker’s Body

The autopsy of veteran journalist Bibhuranjan Sarker revealed no visible external or internal injuries, doctors said today.

Sarker, 71, had left his Siddheshwari home in Dhaka on Thursday morning but never returned. His body was found the next day in the Meghna River near Balakir Char in Gazaria, Munshiganj.

The postmortem was carried out at Munshiganj General Hospital around 11:30 a.m. in the presence of police officers and relatives.

Dr. Sheikh Md. Ehsan, the hospital’s residential medical officer who conducted the examination, said the body showed signs of slight decomposition from being submerged in water but bore no injury marks.

He added that samples from the teeth, hair, liver, kidney, and stomach were preserved for further forensic testing in Dhaka. “A conclusive report can only be given once the lab results are available,” he noted.

Sarker’s younger brother, Chiroranjan Sarker, said the family would wait for the final autopsy findings before making any legal decisions. The body will be taken to Dhaka, kept briefly at his Siddheshwari residence, and later cremated at Borodeshwari Kali Temple in Sabujbagh.

Inspector Mohammad Saleh Ahmed Pathan of Kolagachia Naval Police confirmed that the body was handed over to the family and that further legal steps would be considered after discussions with them.

Bibhuranjan Sarker, who was serving as Senior Assistant Editor at the daily Ajker Patrika, went missing around 10:00 a.m. on Thursday. That night, his family filed a general diary with Ramna Police Station. His body was recovered from the river on Friday afternoon around 3:45 p.m.
