Record Food Reserves Reported in Bangladesh Since Independence: DG

Bangladesh is currently experiencing the highest food reserve levels since independence, according to the Director General of the Food Department, Md. Abul Hasanath Humayun Kabir.

Speaking at a discussion on the implementation of the ongoing “Food-Friendly Program” held at Sherpur District Circuit House on Saturday (August 23), the DG told reporters:

> “For the first time since independence, the country has stockpiled a record quantity of rice. At present, nearly 2.25 million metric tons of rice are stored in government silos across the nation.”

He emphasized that the government maintains food reserves every year to ensure price stability in the market, protection for farmers, and readiness for any emergency or natural disaster.

The DG further noted that the Food-Friendly Program—which began on August 17—will continue for six months. Around 5.5 million cardholders are beneficiaries of this subsidized rice distribution initiative. He also mentioned that in Sherpur district, the number of beneficiaries could be expanded upon the Deputy Commissioner’s request to the ministry.

Regarding previous issues with distribution, the DG explained:

> “Although the government had issued a circular for replacing dealers after the last administration change, in some areas, legal complications and injunctions delayed the process. We expect these to be resolved soon, ensuring smoother service delivery.”

He also urged journalists to play an active role in monitoring the program, stressing:

> “The government wants marginalized communities to receive their rightful benefits. If you notice irregularities, please report them so corrective measures can be taken.”

The meeting was chaired by Sherpur Deputy Commissioner Torafdar Mahmudur Rahman and attended by officials including Regional Food Controller (Mymensingh) Md. Ashraful Alam, Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Ms. Hafiza Jesmin, District Food Controller Md. Nazmul Haque Bhuiyan, and upazila executive officers.
