Section 144 declared in Chattogram University area

After clashes between students and local residents near the campus, the Hathazari administration has enforced Section 144 around the university. The order will remain in place until midnight Monday.

Triggering incident

The unrest reportedly began when a local house caretaker assaulted a female student, leading to a violent confrontation between students and villagers near the university’s Gate No. 2.

Restrictions under the order

According to the notice, gatherings, rallies, protests, or carrying weapons are banned in the affected area. No more than five people are allowed to move together within the restricted zone.

Authorities’ statement

The local UNO said the step was taken to preserve peace and order on campus and nearby areas.

Casualties and disruption

Several clashes over the past two days left at least 180 students and university officials, including the Pro-Vice Chancellor and Proctor, injured. Locals also claimed that a dozen people from their side were hurt. Following the violence, all scheduled exams of the university have been postponed.
