The National Citizen Party (NCP) has urged Chief Adviser Yunus to ban the activities of the Jatiya Party, accusing the party of assisting the Awami League in “legitimizing the last three controversial elections.”
The NCP also called for a Constituent Assembly election to be held in February.
“There is no difference between the Jatiya Party and the Awami League,” said NCP Senior Joint Convener Ariful Islam Adeeb during a briefing with journalists in front of Jamuna after meeting the chief adviser.
He added, “We have observed that the Jatiya Party openly supported the Awami League during elections. Given their clear alignment with a previously banned organization and their role in legitimizing illegal parliamentary proceedings, we have requested the chief adviser to suspend the organizational activities of the Jatiya Party.”
Adeeb further noted that the government itself acknowledged that the previous regime had maintained power through the three disputed elections. “The Jatiya Party directly participated in these elections as an ally of the regime, helping to legitimize them,” he said.
He also pointed out that election posters of Jatiya Party leaders Mujibul Haque Chunnu and Shamim Haider Patwary explicitly identified them as “Awami League-nominated candidates.”
On the constitutional front, Adeeb stressed, “For the legal and constitutional credibility of the July Charter, we recommended that February’s election be conducted as a Constituent Assembly election. This approach can offer a permanent solution to the country’s 54-year-long political crisis.”
The NCP leaders also requested that the chief adviser ensure the Election Commission remains capable and neutral.
