Police have lodged a case against around 3,500 unidentified individuals in connection with the violent incident at the shrine of Nurul Haque, popularly known as Nural Pagla, in Goaland upazila of Rajbari.
The case was filed in the early hours today by Sub-Inspector Selim, accusing the attackers of assaulting law enforcement, obstructing government duties, vandalism, arson, and damaging public property, said Rakibul Islam, officer-in-charge of Goalandaghat Police Station.
“We are reviewing video footage to identify and arrest those involved,” the OC stated.
Yesterday, hundreds stormed a darbar sharif, exhumed the body of Nurul Haque from his grave, and set it ablaze.
The unrest erupted after Friday prayers when Nurul’s followers, who regarded him as a pir (spiritual guide), clashed with locals operating under the banner of the “Iman-Aqeedah Protection Committee.”
The confrontation left one person dead and 22 injured, including a journalist.
When police and administrative officials intervened, the crowd vandalized vehicles belonging to the UNO, the additional superintendent of police, and the OC of Goaland Ghat Police Station. Five policemen and two local officials were hurt after being attacked with sticks and stones.
According to the OC, the current case addresses the assault on police. A separate murder case will be filed once the deceased’s family submits a complaint. Authorities also confirmed they will register additional cases if other victims come forward.
