BNP Chairperson and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia was laid to rest beside her husband, former President and BNP founder Ziaur Rahman, at Zia Udyan in the capital on Wednesday evening. She was buried with full state honors shortly before 5:00 pm.

Earlier in the day, massive crowds gathered at the National Parliament complex and Manik Mia Avenue to attend her funeral prayers. From early morning, people arrived in groups, and by midday, major roads from Manik Mia Avenue to Karwan Bazar were filled with mourners. The janaza began at 3:03 pm and concluded two minutes later.

Following the prayers, Khaleda Zia’s flag-draped coffin was taken from the Parliament area to Zia Udyan under tight security. Around 4:30 pm, her body was brought near Ziaur Rahman’s mausoleum in a special vehicle. Members of the army and navy then carried the coffin on their shoulders to the burial site.

During the burial, her family members—including Tarique Rahman, his wife Zubaida Rahman, their daughter Zaima Rahman, as well as relatives of her late son Arafat Rahman—stood alongside BNP leaders, activists, and representatives of other political parties to pay their final respects.

Meanwhile, the BNP announced a seven-day mourning period following Khaleda Zia’s death. Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi said party leaders and activists would wear black badges, condolence books would be opened at all party offices, and prayer programs would be held nationwide.

Khaleda Zia passed away on Tuesday morning at Evercare Hospital in Dhaka at the age of 80 after receiving treatment there for several weeks. Her death prompted an outpouring of grief across the country, with political leaders, institutions, and foreign dignitaries expressing condolences and honoring her long role in Bangladesh’s political history.
