BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has called for a national parliamentary election following minimal reforms. Speaking at a discussion at the National Press Club on Tuesday (January 21), he emphasized the importance of reforms before holding elections.
He mentioned that proposals for reforms have started to emerge and expressed hope that the chief advisor would make decisions after consulting all stakeholders. Mirza Fakhrul stressed the need for an elected government with public mandate, highlighting that elected administrations have greater legitimacy than unelected ones. He stated, “We are not demanding immediate elections but want elections after essential reforms are in place.”
Urging patience among supporters, he noted that people are taking to the streets daily with their demands, but cautioned against impulsive actions or overzealous behavior that could lead to instability.
Mirza Fakhrul acknowledged the flaws in the current system, stating, “The state was not built the way we envision it. Mistakes and challenges exist, and transformation will not happen overnight. However, with the opportunities presented by the reform proposals, we hope for positive changes.” He added that progress towards a democratic framework is essential for moving forward.
He concluded by advising against hasty actions, noting that controlling the current instability requires patience and measured responses to avoid creating chaos.
