The state has appealed against the acquittal of BNP’s acting chairman, Tarique Rahman, and all other accused in the August 21 grenade attack case. The Attorney General’s office confirmed this information on Wednesday, March 19, stating that the hearing could take place today.
Earlier, on December 1, a High Court bench comprising Justice AKM Asaduzzaman and Justice Syed Enayetur Rahman acquitted Tarique Rahman and all other defendants.
On October 10, 2018, a Dhaka court sentenced 19 individuals, including former BNP State Minister for Home Lutfozzaman Babar, to death in connection with the grenade attack case. Tarique Rahman, who is currently in London, was sentenced to life imprisonment along with 18 others, while 11 individuals received varying prison terms.
The attack took place on August 21, 2004, at an Awami League rally on Bangabandhu Avenue in Dhaka, killing 24 people and injuring nearly 300 others. Then-opposition leader Sheikh Hasina narrowly escaped the attack. Following the incident, cases were filed, leading to subsequent legal proceedings.
