Despite Most Shares Declining, DSE Index Climbs Higher

On Thursday, the last trading day of the week, the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE), the country’s premier stock market, saw a rise in indices despite a decline in the prices of most shares. Trading volume also increased compared to the previous day. Meanwhile, the Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) experienced a drop in its index but reported higher turnover.
Market observations revealed that DSE trading fluctuated throughout the day, and by the end, the benchmark index, DSEX, rose by 11.85 points or 0.22%, closing at 5,120.47 points. The Shariah index, DSES, gained 3.37 points or 0.29%, ending at 1,155.72 points, while the DS30 index increased by 5.73 points or 0.29%, reaching 1,919.11 points. Total turnover on the DSE amounted to BDT 401.77 crore, an increase of BDT 10.62 crore from the previous day’s BDT 391.15 crore. Over 17.57 crore shares were traded in 132,365 transactions. Of the 400 traded securities, prices rose for 156, fell for 173, and remained unchanged for 71.
Robi Axiata PLC topped the DSE turnover chart with shares worth BDT 23.32 crore traded. Following it were Bangladesh Shipping Corporation at BDT 17.52 crore, Midland Bank PLC at BDT 10.62 crore, and others like Taufika Foods and Simtex Industries. The top gainers list was led by Silva Pharmaceuticals, which saw a 9.80% rise in share price, followed by Midland Bank PLC at 7.24%, and Baraka Power Limited at 6.25%.
On the other hand, the CSE reported that its CSCX index rose by 21.39 points or 0.24%, closing at 8,801.84 points, while the CASPI index increased by 47.21 points or 0.32%, reaching 14,529.47 points. A total of 198 companies were traded on the CSE, with 107 gaining, 57 losing, and 34 remaining unchanged. Turnover on the CSE stood at BDT 8.23 crore, up from the previous day’s BDT 7.54 crore. Top CSE performers in terms of turnover included Khan Brothers PP Woven Bag Industries Limited at BDT 1.78 crore and Sunlife Insurance Limited at BDT 1.36 crore.
