Students of Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (KUET) have set out to join the ‘Long March to Dhaka’ program in support of their three-point demand. On Wednesday (27 August) morning, more than a hundred students from different batches left the campus on three buses.
Before departure, the students said, “The engineering rights movement has been ongoing for over six months. We are now in its final phase. Until our logical demands are met, students of all engineering universities will remain on the streets.”
The initiative follows a call given the night before (26 August) by students of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), who staged a blockade at Shahbagh intersection from 3 pm to 8 pm but, failing to get assurances, declared the long march.
The organizers urged engineering students across the country to participate in the program.
The three-point charter of demands includes:
1. Cancellation of the existing 33% quota for diploma engineers in 9th grade recruitment, ensuring merit-based selection.
2. Removal of the 100% quota for diploma engineers in 10th grade posts, making the positions open for all.
3. Restriction on using the title “Engineer” without a BSc degree, with legal action against violations.
