Bangladesh has approved the purchase of two additional liquefied natural gas (LNG) cargoes at significantly higher prices, reflecting continued pressure in the international energy market.

The decision was endorsed by the Cabinet Committee on Public Procurement during a meeting chaired by Finance and Planning Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury on Monday.

Under the approved proposals, one LNG cargo will be acquired at $24.63 per MMBtu, while the second cargo will cost $24.25 per MMBtu.

The latest purchases come just days after authorities approved another LNG shipment at $23.93 per MMBtu, highlighting a sharp upward trend in fuel procurement costs. By comparison, Bangladesh was able to secure LNG at below $10.50 per MMBtu in December last year, meaning prices have more than doubled within a matter of months.

According to officials, the procurement is being conducted through an international quotation process under the country’s public procurement regulations.

The 46th LNG cargo, scheduled for delivery between September 13 and 14, will be supplied by POSCO International Corporation at a price of $24.625 per MMBtu.

Meanwhile, the 47th LNG cargo, expected between September 23 and 24, will be delivered by TotalEnergies Gas & Power Limited (UK) at $24.25 per MMBtu.

Energy analysts say rising LNG costs could increase pressure on import expenditures and energy-sector finances, particularly for countries heavily dependent on imported fuel supplies.

The latest approvals underscore Bangladesh’s ongoing efforts to ensure energy security and maintain gas supply despite volatility in global energy markets.
