The International Monetary Fund (IMF) is set to present a proposal for releasing $645 million to Bangladesh under its ongoing loan program at its Executive Board meeting on February 5. If approved, the funds are expected to be disbursed by February 10, according to Chris Papageorgiou, head of the IMF’s Development Macroeconomics Division.
Ahead of this fourth tranche release, an IMF delegation led by Papageorgiou visited Dhaka on December 3 to review the progress on reform conditions and discuss potential new loans. Concluding their mission, the delegation held a press conference at the Ministry of Finance today, where Papageorgiou remarked that Bangladesh’s economic outlook remains challenging, with inflation significantly exceeding IMF projections. He emphasized the importance of internal revenue growth and ongoing reforms in the banking sector for continued IMF support.
