At least five people were killed and five others injured when a bus veered off the Lakshmipur-Dhaka road and plunged into a canal near Chandragonj Kafil Uddin Degree College on Saturday morning, according to police reports.
The victims have been identified as Morshed Alam, 50; Joynal Abedin, 54; Humayun Rashid, 40; Ripon Hossain, 35; and Mazed Hossain, 38, all residents of Shekharpur in Chandraganj upazila.
The accident took place around 8 a.m. when the ‘Ananda Paribahan’ bus reportedly went out of control and fell into the Rahmatkhali canal. Five passengers were injured in the crash, police said. Three of the injured later succumbed to their injuries at a nearby hospital.
Authorities, including local police and fire service personnel, rushed to the scene and carried out a rescue operation. They were able to pull 20 passengers to safety from the canal, while others swam to shore on their own.
