In Chandpur’s Hajiganj area, supporters of the BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami clashed after a distorted image of two central BNP leaders was shared on Facebook. At least ten people from both sides were injured in Friday morning’s incident, which took place in Palishara village of Gandharbapur North Union.

Several of the injured have been admitted to Hajiganj Upazila Health Complex and Chandpur General Hospital.

Kazi Jasim, former member secretary of the upazila unit of Jubo Dal, said that on Thursday night, Elias Hossain, the Jamaat ameer of the union, shared a distorted photo of a BNP leader from his personal Facebook account. When BNP activists confronted him about it on Friday morning, Jamaat members attacked them without warning, he claimed.

Nesar Ahmed, a Jubo Dal leader from the union who was injured, said, “At least five of us were hurt in the attack, and those injured are receiving treatment at the hospital.”

Jamaat leaders, however, denied the allegations and presented a counterclaim. Maulana Mozammel Hossain, ameer of Hajiganj upazila Jamaat, said the Facebook post was removed Thursday night. Elias Hossain also issued an apology in another post. Despite that, members of a local mosque committee began organizing a meeting about the issue. According to him, BNP supporters attacked Elias during that time, and 10–12 Jamaat activists were injured while trying to defend him.

Elias Hossain echoed the same account, saying, “I accidentally shared the image from my personal Facebook account. When some people pointed it out, I deleted it. I also posted an apology afterward.”

Following the incident, police were deployed in the area. Officer-in-Charge of Hajiganj Police Station, Mohammad Mohiuddin Faruq, said, “We’ve heard that 8–9 people were injured in a clash between Jamaat and BNP activists. No one has filed a complaint yet. If a complaint is submitted, we will take appropriate action.”
