Bangladesh Cricket Board president Tamim Iqbal has raised the possibility that the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) may not be held this year, while saying he would prefer to see the country’s flagship domestic T20 tournament reorganized rather than discontinued.

Speaking in an interview with local media, Iqbal said the final decision would largely rest with the BPL Governing Council, but acknowledged that staging the tournament this year remained uncertain.

“It may not happen this year,” Iqbal said. “Personally, I want the BPL to be organized properly, with the focus on cricket, performances and results. I do not want negative headlines about financial disputes.”

Iqbal said that although the BPL is a franchise-based competition, it represents Bangladesh internationally and therefore its reputation needs to be protected.

The uncertainty comes with the 2028 T20 World Cup on the horizon, raising questions about whether skipping a season could affect Bangladesh’s preparations. Iqbal said the team would still have opportunities to play other T20 competitions and that the BPL could return in stronger form in 2027.

“We can organize it properly in 2027 even if we cannot hold it this year,” he said.

Iqbal also discussed the state of domestic club cricket in Dhaka, saying several competitions had been completed since the new board leadership took office. He said arrangements were also being discussed to provide financial assistance to players affected by the absence of teams from the second-division competition.

Meanwhile, uncertainty also surrounds India’s proposed tour of Bangladesh.

Iqbal said the Bangladesh Cricket Board remained in regular contact with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), but stopped short of confirming whether the Indian team would travel to Bangladesh.

“I have my limitations,” Iqbal said, adding that he had gone as far as he could in his capacity as board president. “We do not want to cross our limits. The two boards remain in regular communication.”

He described matches between Bangladesh and India as highly enjoyable for cricket fans but said he could not provide a more definite update on

the t proposed series at this stage.

The BPL remains one of Bangladesh’s most prominent domestic sporting events, but concerns over its organization, finances and franchise management have repeatedly drawn scrutiny in recent seasons.
