Ducsu voting underway: 35% turnout in first three hours

Voting for the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) election kicked off at 8 a.m. on Tuesday, with roughly 35% of registered students casting their ballots in most polling centres during the first three hours.
Returning officers reported consistent voter turnout across the campus. At the Senate Building centre, approximately 1,100 students had voted within the first two hours.
“Here, there are 2,043 eligible voters. Everyone who wants to vote will have the opportunity. There are 40 booths and seven tables,” said Returning Officer Sheikh Touhidul Islam, describing the turnout as promising.
At the Physical Education Centre, where three halls were holding polls, Returning Officer Kazi Moshtak Gausul Haque noted that Jagannath Hall had already seen nearly 50% voter participation—around 1,000 ballots—by 11 a.m. “The queue is still long,” he added, mentioning that the hall has 2,225 registered voters.
Salimullah Muslim Hall reported about 30% of students had voted, while Sergeant Zahurul Haque Hall recorded roughly 40% turnout, with nearly 800 votes cast.
Rokeya Hall students were casting their votes at the TSC centre. Returning Officer Prof. Nasrin Sultana said that by 11 a.m., nearly 35% of the hall’s 5,600 voters had participated, with long lines still outside.
Prof. Kazi Maruful Islam from the Development Studies Department noted that at the Geology Department polling centre, roughly 60% of students from Sufia Kamal Hall, which has 443 voters, had already voted.
