U.S. President Donald Trump has announced that the country will withdraw from several international organizations, including some affiliated with the United Nations. On Wednesday, he stated that these organizations “act against the national interests of the United States.”

Among the entities Trump plans to exit are a major climate agreement and a UN body that focuses on gender equality and women’s empowerment. A memorandum released Wednesday listed the organizations, naming 35 outside the UN and 31 UN-affiliated agencies.

Key UN-related organizations on the list include the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), widely recognized as the foundation for the 2015 Paris Climate Agreement. The U.S. did not participate in last year’s annual UN climate conference, marking the first time in three decades it had abstained.

The memorandum clarified that withdrawal from UN agencies legally means halting both participation and funding. Monish Bapna, president and CEO of the U.S.-based environmental group Natural Resources Defense Council, noted that the United States would be the first country to leave the UNFCCC.

The U.S. will also exit UN Women, the UN entity promoting gender equality and women’s empowerment, and UNFPA (United Nations Population Fund), which works in over 150 countries on family planning and maternal and child health. Last year, U.S. funding for UNFPA had already been significantly reduced.

Most of the organizations Trump intends to withdraw from had already seen cuts in U.S. funding. The UN has yet to respond to the formal announcement.

This move reflects Trump’s long-standing approach to international bodies, particularly UN agencies. He has repeatedly questioned their effectiveness, spending, and accountability, arguing that these organizations often fail to serve U.S. interests.

Since starting his second term a year ago, Trump has sought to reduce U.S. funding for the UN. He has halted participation in the UN Human Rights Council, suspended funds for the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees, and withdrawn from UNESCO. He had previously announced plans to pull the U.S. out of the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Paris Climate Agreement.

Other organizations on the U.S. withdrawal list include the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), the International Energy Forum (IEF), the UN Register of Conventional Arms (UNRCA), and the UN Peacebuilding Commission.
