In a letter sent to Norway’s prime minister, US President Donald Trump said he no longer feels compelled to focus “only on peace,” citing the fact that he was not awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. In the same message, he reiterated his interest in bringing Greenland under US control.

Trump also warned of imposing higher tariffs on European countries that oppose Washington’s move regarding Greenland. The remarks drew objections from Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre and Finnish President Alexander Stubb, prompting Trump to address the issue directly in his letter to Støre.

In the letter, Trump wrote that despite claiming credit for stopping more than eight wars, Norway decided not to award him the Nobel Peace Prize. As a result, he said, he does not feel obligated to think exclusively about peace anymore—although he added that peace would still remain a priority. He said he is now free to focus on what he believes is best and right for the United States.

Trump has for some time been actively pursuing the idea of taking control of Greenland from Denmark. He has threatened punitive tariffs against countries that stand in the way of this effort. In response to such warnings, the European Union is considering countermeasures against the United States.

Although Trump did not receive the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize, the medal eventually ended up in his possession. This year’s Nobel Peace Prize winner, Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado, handed the medal to Trump last Thursday. While Trump welcomed the gesture, the Norwegian Nobel Committee clarified that regardless of who holds the medal, the prize officially remains in the name of the declared recipient.

In his message to Norway’s prime minister, Trump repeated his long-standing argument that Denmark is incapable of protecting Greenland from Russia and China. He questioned Denmark’s continued claim over the territory and asserted that Greenland would not be secure unless it came under US ownership.

Denmark is a member of NATO, which obligates alliance members to defend one another if attacked. European leaders have expressed anger over Trump’s focus on acquiring Greenland rather than respecting alliance commitments, with some analysts warning that such tensions could pose a serious challenge to NATO’s unity.
