Private tutor sentenced to death for rape case of a 7 years old

A Dhaka court has sentenced private tutor Zahidul Islam to death for the rape of a seven-year-old child in the Banashree area of the capital. In addition to the death penalty, he was fined 50,000 taka, and if he fails to pay, he will serve an additional six months in prison. The verdict was delivered by Judge Rukhsana Begum Hepi of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-3 on Wednesday, March 19. Zahidul, who hails from Perikhali village in Baragona, was found guilty of committing the crime in March 2021, when he came to tutor the child at her home. The child’s parents were working in a garage near their house when they saw Zahidul hurriedly leaving. Upon hearing the child’s cries, they rushed inside, and the child revealed that she had been assaulted by her tutor. The child’s father filed a case under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act. In July 2021, the investigation officer submitted the charge sheet against Zahidul, and the trial began in January 2022. After the verdict, the prosecution lawyer expressed satisfaction with the justice, while the defense announced plans to appeal to a higher court.
