Police have arrested a 40-year-old man named Mashiur Rahman, also known as Samrat, in connection with a series of killings in Savar, on the outskirts of Dhaka.

Over the past six months, six bodies were discovered in and around an abandoned municipal community center in the area. According to the Savar Model Police Station, the suspect was identified after officers reviewed newly installed CCTV footage. During initial questioning, he reportedly admitted involvement in all six deaths.

Mashiur was sent to court on Monday morning with a police request for 10 days of remand.

The information was shared at a press briefing by Arafatul Islam, Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime, Operations and Traffic-North), Dhaka District.

After his arrest, the suspect told police he lived in the Bank Colony area of Savar. However, officers said they were unable to confirm this address. Police believe he lived a transient lifestyle and did not show signs of mental instability during questioning.

Investigators had been closely monitoring the community center area following repeated discoveries of bodies. With assistance from the municipality, the premises were cleaned and CCTV cameras were recently installed.

On Sunday, two severely burned bodies were recovered from the second floor of the building. The suspect was later seen behaving suspiciously on camera, which led to his detention. He then confessed to those two killings as well as four earlier cases. Further details are expected after interrogation.

Police stated that five bodies had previously been recovered from the abandoned center within the last five months. In a separate incident, the body of a 75-year-old woman, Asma Begum, was found behind a tea stall near the Savar Model Mosque.

Of the six victims, five have not yet been identified. Separate criminal cases have been filed for each incident.

According to police records, the first body was found on August 29 last year. It was a man, approximately 30 years old, discovered with his hands tied on the second floor of the center. On October 11, a woman of similar age was found in a bathroom with her throat cut. Another unidentified man, around 35, was found dead there on December 19. The two most recent victims, believed to be about 13 and 25 years old, were found burned on Sunday.
