The Immigration Police have arrested Tungibaria Union Parishad Chairman Nadira Rahman under Barisal Sadar Upazila, accused in the explosives and murder case during the student-public movement in Barisal. It is learned that the Immigration Police arrested her at the airport while she was fleeing the country.

She was arrested from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on Wednesday (May 28) afternoon.

Nadira Rahman is the Chairman of Tungibaria Union Parishad under Barisal Sadar Upazila. She is the wife of former Deputy Commissioner, former Secretary and former Chairman of the Energy Regulatory Commission Abdur Rob Khan alias AR Khan. Her father’s name is Sheikh Abdur Rahman, mother’s name is Ankhi Rahman. Her ancestral home is known to be Khulna.

Locals said that she was elected UP Chairman after defeating Awami League’s nominated candidate Bahauddin in the last Union Parishad election. There are allegations that while he was serving as the president of the managing committee of Singherkathi Bahumukhi High School, he embezzled money donated in the name of the school, harassed various students, and after becoming chairman, he engaged in encroachment, extortion, looting, terrorist activities, extortion at the launch ghat, extortion at the watermelon ghat, and illegal arbitration in the area and the union. The union residents also alleged that he used to run a gang in that area, and if anyone went against him, they would be beaten up with threats.

Some of the former students who were the victims said that he had stopped our exams to establish dominance. A whole year of our lives has been taken away. He does not hesitate to make false accusations and harass us. When one of us married the daughter of Mostafa Sir, the headmaster of Singherkathi Bahumukhi High School, Nadira Rahman also broke up his family. She is one of the worst people we have ever met.

It is learnt from a specific source that while AR Khan was alive, there were several cases registered against him in the ACC, including the name of his wife, UP Chairman Nadira Rahman.

He was detained by the immigration police at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on Wednesday and handed over to the Kotwali Model Police Station in Barisal.

Speaking to the Barisal Kotwali Model Police Station, it was learnt that he was arrested and handed over to the court in a case of explosives and murder during the student-public movement during the popular uprising. Later, when he was produced in the Barisal court on Thursday (May 29), the learned court ordered him to be sent to jail.

It is also learnt that there are also cases of theft and house vandalism registered against him in the Bandar Police Station of the Barisal Metropolitan Police.
