Mamata Banerjee is one of the most influential and long-serving politicians in the Indian state of West Bengal. He was born on January 5, 1955 in Kolkata. Mamata’s political career started from her student days. He entered politics through the student union and later joined the Indian National Congress. In 1997, Mamata Banerjee broke away from the Congress and formed her own political party, the Trinamool Congress (TMC). The party emerged as a strong alternative to the Congress in West Bengal. In 2011, the Trinamool Congress led by Mamata Banerjee ended 34 years of Left Front rule in West Bengal and Mamata became the state’s first woman Chief Minister.

As Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee initiated various social and economic schemes, such as Kanyashree, Yuvashree and Sabuj Sathi. He has done various developmental works in agriculture, education, health and infrastructure sectors. However, many controversies also arose during his rule, especially for his opposition to the land acquisition of Singur and Nandigram.

Trinamool Congress led by Mamata Banerjee won re-election in 2016 and 2021. In the 2021 assembly elections, he came to power for the third time in West Bengal despite the rise of the BJP, which is a testament to the strength and popularity of his leadership.
