The National Citizens Party (NCP) issued a statement on Monday, May 12, addressing the recent controversy surrounding certain provocative slogans raised during the “Shahbagh Blockade” protest, which called for declaring the Awami League a terrorist organization and banning it. The NCP clarified that any offensive slogans heard during the demonstration are solely the responsibility of the groups involved, and that NCP members had no part in voicing such statements. The party emphasized that their participation in the anti-fascist movement reflected the spirit of the people’s historic struggles of 1947, 1971, and 2024.
The NCP further condemned the use of slogans that oppose the nation’s historical legacy, stating that such actions disrupt the momentum toward renewed national unity in the wake of the July uprising. They affirmed that their members remained committed to inclusive political discourse, noting that during the protest, despite objections from some quarters, participants firmly upheld the national anthem.
The statement also urged those accused of siding against the people during the 1971 Liberation War, and those suspected of abetting atrocities, to clarify their political positions in the interest of national reconciliation. The NCP stressed that recognition of key milestones in Bangladesh’s struggle—1947, 1971, and 2024—is essential for any party seeking to engage in national politics.
In conclusion, the party called on all political forces to act with foresight and responsibility to ensure a brighter and more unified future for the nation, asserting that only through broad-based unity can the ideology of Mujibism be fully challenged.
