The Home Affairs Advisor, Lt. Gen. (Retd.) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, announced that all political activities of the Awami League have been officially banned through a government notification. This statement came during a press briefing following a meeting of the Law and Order Advisory Council held on Monday, May 12. He confirmed that it is now their responsibility to enforce the ordinance in accordance with the relevant laws.

Earlier, on Saturday, May 10, Legal Affairs Advisor Asif Nazrul disclosed that the interim advisory council had decided to suspend all operations of the Awami League until the conclusion of its trial. He further stated that a special session of the council approved an amendment to the International Crimes Tribunal Act. The amendment now empowers the tribunal to prosecute political parties, affiliated groups, or their supporters.

Citing national security and the protection of sovereignty, as well as ensuring the safety of July Movement activists and witnesses involved in the tribunal, the advisory council resolved to impose a total ban on Awami League’s activities, including its online presence, under the Anti-Terrorism Act.

Asif Nazrul added that the necessary circulars to enforce these decisions will be issued on the next working day. Additionally, the council decided to finalize and publish the July Declaration within 30 working days.
