Jamaat-e-Islami leader Dr. Shafiqur Rahman recently stated that Islami Bank was not seized by Jamaat but has instead “returned to its rightful place.” Addressing a public gathering in Syedpur, Nilphamari, he refuted allegations of Jamaat’s involvement in the bank’s takeover, labeling them as baseless. According to him, attempts were made by “new robbers” post-August 5 to capture the bank, but they fled in the face of resistance.
Dr. Rahman emphasized Jamaat’s vision for a harmonious nation, ensuring equal rights for people of all religions and communities without coercion. He promised reforms to establish an education system where women could choose to observe purdah willingly. Highlighting Sheikh Hasina’s governance, he accused her of looting the country’s wealth and undermining sovereignty, leaving the economy in shambles. However, he vowed to rebuild the nation with collective efforts, free from corruption and oppression.
In contrast, BNP leader Ruhul Kabir Rizvi criticized the alleged political takeover of Islamic banks after August 5, claiming that the public witnessed these events firsthand. Rizvi accused the ruling party of engaging in widespread extortion and monopolizing resources while deflecting blame onto opposition parties. He argued that BNP’s legacy includes the pride of the 1971 Liberation War and the democratic achievements of 1990, dismissing attempts to tarnish the party’s reputation.
