A massive turnout of BNP leaders, party workers, and the general public gathered at Manik Mia Avenue in Dhaka to pay their respects at the funeral of former Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia. Supporters, wearing black attire and badges and carrying party flags, assembled to honor her. Many attendees traveled from places like Mohakhali and Khulna, arriving on foot.

Khaleda Zia’s body, draped in the national flag, was transported in a procession from her residence in Gulshan to Manik Mia Avenue. The funeral was held at the southern plaza of the National Parliament House and along Manik Mia Avenue, with her burial beside her late husband, former President Ziaur Rahman. Her family, high-ranking officials, foreign dignitaries, and BNP leaders attended the ceremony.

Security was heightened in the area surrounding Evercare Hospital, the National Parliament, and Zia Udyan, with the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), police, RAB, ASF, and military personnel deployed to ensure order. Barricades were placed to control crowds, and traffic in key areas was restricted.

Dignitaries from neighboring countries also paid tribute. India’s Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar arrived in Dhaka to offer condolences, while Nepal’s Foreign Minister Bala Nanda Sharma, Sri Lanka’s Foreign Minister V. Herath, and Pakistan’s Parliamentary Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq attended the funeral. Several other foreign representatives signed the condolence book at the BNP headquarters in Gulshan.

Special prayers for Khaleda Zia’s soul were planned across mosques and religious institutions nationwide. Public offices, educational institutions, and government buildings remained closed for the day, while essential services continued. The event highlighted nationwide mourning and respect for the late leader, reflecting her significant role in Bangladesh’s political history and her enduring legacy as a steadfast and principled figure.
