The Palestinian Authority has temporarily suspended Al Jazeera TV’s operations, accusing the channel of broadcasting provocative content, according to a report by Reuters.
On Wednesday, the Palestinian news agency WAFA stated that the decision was made jointly by the Ministers of Culture, Interior, and Communications. They claimed the Qatar-based channel’s coverage was misleading and inciting further conflict. The suspension, deemed temporary, has no specified end date.
Last week, the Palestinian Authority criticized Al Jazeera for its coverage of heightened tensions between Palestinian security forces and armed fighters in the Jenin refugee camp in the Israeli-occupied West Bank. The channel condemned the decision, calling it an attempt to deter reporting on ongoing aggression in the region. Al Jazeera also urged the Palestinian Authority to reverse the suspension and ensure press freedom in the West Bank.
The suspension is not expected to apply to Gaza, which is governed by Hamas rather than the Palestinian Authority. Meanwhile, the Fatah-led Palestinian Authority accused Al Jazeera of exposing divisions among Arabs and Palestinians and called on citizens to refrain from cooperating with the channel.
Previously, in September last year, the Israeli military raided Al Jazeera’s offices in Ramallah and ordered their closure. Earlier in May, Israel banned the channel’s operations, labeling it a threat to national security, a decision later upheld by an Israeli court.
