West Bengal’s new cabinet is set to take oath on Saturday morning at 10 AM at Kolkata’s historic Brigade Parade Ground. The BJP, which secured victory in the recent state assembly election, reportedly chose the date ahead of Rabindranath Tagore’s birth anniversary celebrations. Preparations for the ceremony, including stage construction and venue decoration, are now almost complete.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to attend the event along with Home Minister Amit Shah, senior BJP leaders, and chief ministers from around 20 states. Several prominent personalities from Kolkata and across India have also been invited.
Although the swearing-in schedule has been announced, the BJP has not yet officially revealed the name of the next Chief Minister of West Bengal. Political discussions are largely centered around senior BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari, who is widely seen as a leading contender for the post.
Amit Shah is scheduled to arrive in Kolkata today to finalize the government formation process. He is expected to hold meetings with senior state BJP leaders at a hotel in New Town before attending a larger gathering with the party’s 207 newly elected MLAs at the New Town Convention Centre. During the meeting, the BJP legislative party leader—and possibly the Chief Minister candidate—could be formally chosen. Discussions on cabinet positions are also likely to take place.
Following the meeting, BJP leaders may approach Governor C. P. Radhakrishnan at Raj Bhavan to officially stake claim to form the government.
Suvendu Adhikari, whose name is most frequently mentioned for the Chief Minister’s role, won from both Nandigram and Bhabanipur constituencies in the election. Throughout the campaign, he was projected by the BJP as one of the party’s key political faces in the state.
During campaign rallies, Amit Shah repeatedly stated that West Bengal would get a “son of the soil” as Chief Minister. Since then, speculation around Adhikari’s elevation has intensified.
The participation of chief ministers from several Indian states is also being viewed as a significant political message. BJP leaders from states such as Uttar Pradesh and Assam had actively campaigned in West Bengal during the elections, and political observers believe the swearing-in ceremony is being planned as an event of national political importance.
