BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has called for the intervention of the Army Chief following the death of a BNP leader who was detained during a military operation in Jibannagar, Chuadanga. In a statement issued Tuesday, he condemned the incident and demanded a fair investigation to ensure justice.

On Wednesday night, Shamsuzzaman Wablu, General Secretary of Jibannagar Municipality BNP, was detained during an army operation. He was later taken to a hospital, where the duty doctor declared him dead.

In his statement, Mirza Fakhrul alleged that Shamsuzzaman was subjected to torture by some members of the security forces under the pretext of seizing weapons, which led to his death. He said such actions by security personnel are detrimental to the country.

The BNP statement described the killing as “extra-judicial” and a blatant violation of the nation’s legal system. It stressed that even during the caretaker government period, all crimes should be addressed through judicial processes, and justice must be served. Mirza Fakhrul also expressed hope for the Army Chief’s intervention in this “horrifying and tragic” incident.

Following the BNP statement, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) issued a release saying that the detained individual suddenly fell ill and became unconscious after the operation. He was quickly taken to the Jibannagar Upazila Health Complex and was declared dead by the attending doctor around 12:25 a.m. The statement noted that the camp commander and all army personnel involved have been withdrawn, and a probe committee has been formed.

Shamsuzzaman Wablu, who ran a pharmacy business named “Hafiza Pharmacy,” was serving as the General Secretary of Jibannagar Municipality BNP. His detention and subsequent death sparked protests late Wednesday night, with BNP and allied members blocking roads in front of the hospital, setting fires, and demanding accountability for what they termed a “murder.”
