A student named Arif (19) died of electrocution while hanging a banner at Chittagong University (CU). He was a student of the Department of Zoology, 2024-25 academic session.
The accident occurred on Tuesday night, near the main gates of A F Rahman Hall and Abdur Rab Hall at the university.
According to eyewitnesses, while working to hang a banner in front of the hall, Arif accidentally came into contact with a high-voltage main power line passing overhead. He was electrocuted and remained hanging for some time. When the power connection was quickly cut off, he fell to the ground.
Students present at the scene immediately rescued him and rushed him to Evercare Hospital in the city for treatment. However, the on-duty doctor pronounced him dead upon arrival at the hospital.
As news of the incident spread, a pall of grief fell over the entire campus. Classmates and fellow students expressed deep sorrow over the loss of their friend, while also voicing anger over the campus’s overall safety and the risky electrical connections near the halls. They demanded the immediate removal of these dangerous wires and the assurance of campus safety.
