Several incidents have been reported at various points along the Bangladesh-India border, primarily stemming from India’s unilateral installation of barbed wire fences in no-man’s land without prior notice to Bangladesh. These actions have heightened tensions between the two border forces, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and the Border Security Force (BSF). Notably, India has fenced off two kilometers of the Patgram border area, while in Sylhet’s Beanibazar Gojukata border area, BSF has obstructed the reconstruction of a 200-year-old mosque. Additionally, a Bangladeshi national was injured by BSF gunfire late Friday night near the Chapainawabganj border and is currently receiving treatment at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital.
Lt. Col. Golam Kibria, commander of the 59 BGB Battalion, confirmed that BSF fired shots around 2 a.m. near the Azmatpur border. While locals reported hearing 8-9 rounds of gunfire, BGB identified three shots. The injured individual, Shahidul Islam, was reportedly engaged in smuggling activities, though local representatives could not confirm this claim.
Similar tensions were observed in Chapainawabganj’s Binodpur union, where BSF attempted to construct fences in no-man’s land without notifying BGB. This led to a standoff between the forces. In Patgram’s Dahagram union, BSF erected barbed wire fencing over a two-kilometer stretch, despite BGB’s objections. The situation escalated as BSF deployed additional personnel, prompting heightened vigilance from BGB forces.
In Beanibazar, BSF has opposed the reconstruction of the historic Gojukata mosque for four years. BGB has raised the matter with higher authorities, and diplomatic efforts are ongoing to resolve the issue. According to Lt. Col. Mehedi Hasan of the 52 BGB Battalion, the BSF claims the mosque’s reconstruction falls under broader state-level decisions due to its location near the border.
Currently, the situation along these border points remains tense but under control, with both forces continuing regular patrols.
