Traffic movement in Mirpur has gradually returned to normal following clashes between garment workers and police over wage demands on Tuesday. The Mirpur-11 Metro Rail Station, which was temporarily closed for security reasons, has also resumed operations.

Police said at least five people were detained in connection with the clashes.

The confrontation began around 10:00am in the Mirpur-11 area and continued for nearly an hour, involving clashes and chases between workers and police. The situation gradually came under control after protesters dispersed into nearby lanes and alleys.

According to eyewitnesses, garment workers gathered on the streets in Mirpur-11 in the morning, demanding that the minimum monthly wage be increased to Tk 30,000. Clashes broke out when police attempted to remove them from the roads.

During the confrontation, protesters threw bricks and stones at police. Law enforcement personnel responded by firing tear gas shells and sound grenades. Several people were detained during the incident.

Traffic on roads connecting Mirpur-11 with Mirpur-10 and Pallabi was temporarily suspended, triggering congestion in surrounding areas. However, conditions began improving after noon, with vehicle movement gradually increasing before returning to normal.

Operations at Mirpur-11 Metro Rail Station had been suspended from 10:22am for security reasons. The station reopened after the situation came under control.

Pallabi Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Jalal Uddin said the situation began improving after noon and traffic movement had returned to normal. He added that additional police personnel had been deployed at several points across Mirpur to prevent further incidents surrounding the workers’ protest.

Meanwhile, a water cannon and two armoured vehicles were kept ready in the Mirpur-10 area. Members of the Special Response Battalion (SRB), alongside regular police personnel, were also seen on alert.

Although the clashes had ended and the situation had calmed, law enforcement agencies remained on heightened alert across the area.
