Political uncertainty in Bangladesh, driven by shifts in power, is causing both foreign and expatriate investors to lose confidence in investing in the country. Foreign Affairs Adviser Md. Touhid Hossain highlighted this concern, emphasizing that political instability discourages investment. He assured that an electoral roadmap would soon be unveiled to restore confidence.
Speaking as the chief guest at the inaugural session of the “Branding Bangladesh World Conference” organized by the Center for NRBs at Hotel Sonargaon, Dhaka, Hossain stated that investment is crucial for the country’s progress. He expressed hope that political stability would soon be achieved, improving the investment climate. He added that financial security is key to attracting both local and foreign investors, noting that without guarantees, people are reluctant to invest.
Hossain also criticized the foreign branches of political parties like the Awami League, BNP, Jamaat, and Jatiya Party, stating that their antagonistic activities abroad damage the image of Bangladeshis worldwide. He further alleged that Indian media, fueled by expatriate Indians, has been spreading negative, often false, narratives about Bangladesh over the last four months, tarnishing the country’s reputation.
Highlighting the importance of skilled labor, Hossain emphasized that doubling remittance inflows is possible by enhancing workforce capabilities.
Bangladesh Bank Governor Dr. Ahsan H. Mansur noted that the interim government has made progress in addressing past weaknesses. Over the past six months, remittance inflows have grown by 26%, reaching $3 billion, while exports have reached $2.5 billion.
Barrister Saif Uddin Khaled, Speaker of London’s Tower Hamlets, expressed solidarity with Bangladesh, stating that NRBs in the UK always stand by the nation and feel a profound connection to its well-being. The conference, chaired by MS Shekil Chowdhury, also featured remarks from prominent figures, including Bankers’ Association President Abdul Hai Sarkar and former UN peacekeeping commander Major General (Retd.) Fazle Elahi Akbar.
