Former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s adviser Salman F Rahman, former State Minister Zunaid Ahmed Palak, and Awami League leader Tara Mia have been placed on a four-day remand in connection with an attempted murder case during a student-led protest. On Wednesday, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate MA Azharul Islam approved the remand after investigators requested seven days for each accused.
During the hearing, defense lawyers sought to cancel the remand and applied for bail, while the prosecution, represented by Metropolitan Sessions Court Prosecutor Omar Faruk Faruqi, argued in favor of the remand. After considering both sides, the court granted a four-day remand for each defendant.
The case relates to a peaceful march on July 16, held by students protesting against inequality near Dhaka College. Allegedly, members of the Awami League, along with its affiliated organizations Chhatra League and Jubo League, attacked the protesters with weapons. Dhaka College student Md. Shamim sustained injuries, including rubber bullet wounds to his eye and nose. Shamim filed an attempted murder case at the New Market Police Station on November 28.
