During the anti-discrimination student protests, Asaduzzaman Hiru, allegedly the foster son of Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader, has been ordered to jail in connection with the murder of pedestrian Toufiqul Islam in Badda, Dhaka. Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Sefatullah issued the order on Thursday after the case’s investigating officer, SI Md. Hanif of Badda Police Station, requested Hiru’s detention. The defense lawyer sought bail, which the court rejected, directing Hiru to jail. Hiru was arrested by police in the Gulshan area on Wednesday night.
The incident occurred on July 19, 2024, near a Buddhist temple in Badda, where Toufiqul was returning home from a relative’s house amidst the ongoing protests. Around 11 a.m., he was fatally shot at the scene. Following the incident, Toufiqul’s wife, Ismat Jahan Elora, filed a case naming 112 individuals, including former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
