In December, Bangladesh triumphed in a Test match against the West Indies under the leadership of Mehedi Hasan Miraz. Although Nazmul Hossain Shanto has returned as captain, Miraz will play a crucial role in the upcoming Champions Trophy, taking on responsibilities as an all-rounder. Miraz, who has showcased remarkable performances, is ready to shoulder the team’s aspirations. He has requested to be regularly placed at number four in the batting lineup.
Regarding the ongoing Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), Miraz shared his thoughts on the competition’s progress. He acknowledged the challenges of securing quality foreign players due to overlapping tournaments but emphasized the importance of local cricketers stepping up. He believes BPL is a great opportunity for players to prove themselves and gain confidence for international cricket. Commenting on the challenges faced by bowlers in batting-friendly pitches, Miraz emphasized that playing on true pitches allows bowlers to learn how to adapt and improve their skills for international cricket.
Miraz also addressed concerns about payment issues in the BPL, highlighting the need for a well-structured system to benefit all players. He is confident that the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) will resolve the payment concerns, as their well-being directly impacts the team’s performance.
On the national team’s performance, Miraz reflected on the squad selection for the Champions Trophy, noting that the team is built on recent performances, with a few changes based on individual and team dynamics. He expressed his belief that players need to perform consistently to secure their place in the team, with particular reference to Liton Das, whose recent form has been below expectations.
Miraz looks forward to the Champions Trophy, which will be his second appearance after 2017. He stressed the importance of winning matches against top teams like India, Pakistan, and New Zealand to progress. He set his sights on qualifying for the semifinals, believing that with two wins, Bangladesh could make it, and with further victories, they could reach the final.
Miraz’s experience as a captain in the Test match against the West Indies was also shared, where he praised his team’s resilience and positive approach. He mentioned how the team, with several young players, was determined to make a mark, leading to their success after a challenging period in the West Indies. The victory was a result of hard work, strategic planning, and a fighting spirit.
