The former assistant vice president of City Bank has been sentenced to 26 years in prison for fraud

The court sentenced Musabbir Rahim, Assistant Vice President and Head of Card Division of City Bank, to 26 years imprisonment in four separate sections in the case of stealing 25 million from City Bank and its customers through fraud.

 

Judge Syed Arafat Hossain of Dhaka Special Judge Court-4 gave this verdict on Monday.

He has been sentenced to imprisonment for 7 years to 14 years in two sections and a fine of 20,000 to 40,000 taka.

In another section, in addition to 10 years imprisonment, he will be fined one lakh rupees, in default of which he will have to undergo another year of imprisonment. In another section, he has been sentenced to 2 years imprisonment, 20 thousand taka fine, in default of payment he has been sentenced to 6 months imprisonment. This sentence will run concurrently. In this case he will have to suffer the maximum sentence.

Belal Hossain, bench assistant of the concerned court, confirmed the sentence.

It is known that Musabbir Rahim was on bail. However, on this day he could not appear in court due to illness, the lawyer applied for time. The court rejected the application and canceled the bail. An arrest warrant was issued against him along with a sentencing warrant.

According to the details of the case, from November 25, 2015 to April 24, 2016, more than Tk 2.5 million was stolen from City Bank and its customers through fraud. On August 18, 2016, the vice president of the legal division of the head office, Ayub Ullah, filed a case at the Banani police station. After investigating the case, on December 31, 2017, ACC Assistant Director Monirul Islam filed a charge sheet in the court. On August 25, 2019, the court ordered the trial to be started against Musabbir Rahim. During the trial of the case, the court accepted the testimony of 17 out of 21 witnesses.
