A Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight landed three and a half hours after the scheduled time on Monday morning due to lightning damage to the runway at Syedpur Airport in Nilphamari. The plane was at Dhaka’s Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport when it was reported that the runway was damaged. Civil aviation sources said the runway repairs were completed by noon.

On investigation, it is known that only the flight schedule of Biman Bangladesh Airlines has been disrupted due to the risk of the runway. However, flights of other private companies are operating normally.

Syedpur airport sources said that on Sunday night, sudden rain and strong wind blew in the region. It is accompanied by frequent lightning. A part of the runway of Syedpur airport was damaged due to lightning. As a result, a Dash-8 flight of Biman Bangladesh Airlines did not take off on schedule from Dhaka to Syedpur without receiving the signal.

Biman’s district manager Faisal Kabir said that the flight landed at Syedpur at 2:50 after the runway was repaired. Later at 3:11 PM it left again for Dhaka with 60 passengers. The flight was scheduled to arrive at Syedpur at 11 am.

Faisal Kabir, Syedpur manager of Biman Bangladesh Airlines, said that they were informed from the airport that the runway was damaged due to lightning. Landing of Dash-8 model aircraft is risky due to cracks in the runway. As a result, the morning flight with passengers is waiting at Dhaka’s Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.

Syedpur Airport Manager Suplab Kumar Ghosh said that he himself is supervising the repair of the runway. Hope the work will be completed soon.
