The government is taking action against police officers involved in controversial elections during the Awami League’s rule. Officials who served as district police superintendents across 64 districts in the 2018 elections are under scrutiny. Some officers have already been reassigned, and those with over 25 years of service may be forced into retirement. Police sources have confirmed this development.

Meanwhile, 45 former deputy commissioners (DCs) have been made Officers on Special Duty (OSD), with more officials expected to face similar measures in the coming phases. On Friday evening, Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiyan, an advisor for local government, rural development, cooperatives, youth, and sports, stated in a Facebook post that police superintendents responsible for overseeing the 2018 election in all 64 districts would either be made OSD or forced into retirement.

Authorities have compiled a list of police officers who played significant roles in controversial elections. Some key names from the 2018 election include Shah Mizan Shafiur Rahman (Dhaka), Shamsunnahar (Gazipur), Harun-or-Rashid (Narayanganj), Miraj Uddin Ahmed (Narsingdi), and others across various districts. The process aims to assess their level of involvement and take appropriate action, with those deemed highly controversial facing mandatory retirement, while others may be reassigned.

A senior police official confirmed that some officers had already been retired, while others remained under departmental reassignment. On Wednesday, the Ministry of Public Administration issued separate notifications, making 33 district commissioners and returning officers from the 2018 election OSD. Previously, 12 other officials had faced similar actions.
