BNP’s Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman has no fixed date for returning to Bangladesh, according to the party’s Secretary General, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir. Speaking at a press conference at the BNP Chairperson’s Gulshan office on Saturday, Fakhrul stated that Tarique Rahman would return when the time is appropriate.
He also urged the interim government to maintain the highest level of neutrality, warning that no political agenda should influence its actions. Emphasizing the importance of the existing national unity against fascism, he stressed that preserving this unity is crucial for the country’s progress and must be ingrained in the nation’s political culture. Any actions that could weaken or divide this unity must be avoided.
Regarding reforms, Fakhrul highlighted that various proposals for post-fascism state restructuring have emerged through the Reform Commission’s report. He pointed out that BNP had laid the foundation for these reforms with its 31-point democratic restructuring proposal announced on July 13, 2023, long before the mass uprising. Now, a broader unity among democratic forces is essential for adopting and implementing these reforms. He also stated that a duly elected parliament is the only legitimate forum to provide constitutional and legal backing to these proposals.
Earlier, on Thursday, BNP’s legal representative Borhan Uddin confirmed that there are no pending cases against Tarique Rahman in any trial court, indicating that there are no legal barriers preventing his return to politics in Bangladesh.
