The construction of a new Bay Terminal at the Port of Chittagong is set to begin, with a proposed project worth approximately 15,000 crore taka for the development of supporting infrastructure. This will increase the port’s capacity significantly.
On Sunday, April 20, the project, named the “Bay Terminal Marine Infrastructure Development Project” worth 14,909 crore taka, will be presented for approval at the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) meeting. The meeting, held at the NEC conference room, will be chaired by chief advisor Professor Muhammad Yunus. If approved, this project will be one of the largest initiatives undertaken by the current interim government.
According to the Planning Commission, the Chittagong Port Authority will implement the project from April 2025 to June 2031, located in the Ananda Bazar area of North Halishahar. The project will include the construction of a breakwater and navigation channels, along with the necessary infrastructure for rail, road, and other services.
The World Bank will provide 10,272 crore taka for the project, with the government contributing 4,637 crore taka from its own funds.
The Bay Terminal project will consist of three terminals, with two being developed under a public-private partnership (PPP) and one by the Chittagong Port Authority. In response to growing demand at the port, a strategic master plan was developed by the Chittagong Port Authority in 2015, which called for the construction of the Bay Terminal. Surveys were conducted, and a separate project was established to build the necessary infrastructure for this terminal.
