Benazir red-noticed, declared fugitive internationally

Former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed is now the subject of a red notice issued by Interpol over corruption allegations. The confirmation came on Tuesday, April 22, from Enamul Haque Sagar, Assistant Inspector General of the Police Headquarters’ Public Relations and Media Division. He stated that the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed a case against Benazir and submitted relevant documents to Interpol, leading to the red notice. The notice was officially issued on April 10, making Benazir the first IGP in Bangladesh’s history to face such action. However, while the red notice has been issued, his photo and information are yet to appear on Interpol’s “Most Wanted” list, as certain formalities remain. Police confirmed that Benazir is currently absconding with his family, and their whereabouts are unknown. Meanwhile, Interpol is also reviewing legal documents concerning Sheikh Hasina, Obaidul Quader, and 11 others who reportedly fled the country during the student-led protests on August 5, with the possibility of red notices being issued against them as well.
