The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh has set Tuesday, May 13, as the date for the hearing on the appeal regarding the reinstatement of Jamaat-e-Islami’s cancelled registration as a political party. The decision was announced on May 7 by a bench led by Chief Justice Dr. Syed Refaat Ahmed. On that day, lawyer Mohammad Shishir Monir urged the court for an expedited hearing. The appeal process initially began on March 12 but saw no further proceedings since then.
Previously, on October 22 of the last year, the Appellate Division revived Jamaat’s dismissed appeal concerning the cancellation of its registration. This opened a legal path for the party to reclaim its registration and electoral symbol. The case had been pending since the High Court declared Jamaat’s registration void in 2013. In 2018, the Election Commission issued an official notice cancelling the registration, prompting Jamaat to appeal the High Court’s verdict.
However, due to the absence of Jamaat’s lead counsel during the hearing in November 2023, a bench led by then Chief Justice Obaidul Hassan dismissed the appeal for default, thereby upholding the original High Court ruling.
In a separate development, on August 1 of the same year, amid growing student-led anti-discrimination protests, the government declared Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir banned under the Anti-Terrorism Act. However, that ban was reversed on August 28 through a new gazette notification.
