Nursing students protest at Shahbagh demanding degree recognition

Without any prior announcement, students from nursing colleges suddenly blocked the key Shahbagh intersection in Dhaka, disrupting traffic flow in the area. The demonstration began around 2 PM on Wednesday (May 14), when hundreds of students gathered to demand official recognition of the “Diploma in Nursing Science and Midwifery” and “Diploma in Midwifery” courses—taken after completing higher secondary education—as equivalent to a bachelor’s pass degree. Earlier in the day, students held a rally from 10 AM to 1 PM. When they attempted to march towards Shahbagh, police blocked them near the Shahbagh Police Station. However, the students removed the barricades and staged a sit-in at the intersection. They stated that they had been peacefully pressing their demands through human chains, memorandums, and other programs for a long time, but were forced to escalate their movement after repeated neglect.
