Supporters of BNP leader Engineer Ishraq Hossain continued their protest in front of the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) headquarters, demanding he be handed over the responsibilities of mayor. On Sunday, May 18, for the fifth consecutive day, demonstrators marched from different parts of Dhaka and gathered in front of the Nagar Bhaban, causing partial road closures due to crowd pressure.
Under the banner of “Dhakabashi,” hundreds of people began the sit-in on May 14, demanding the formal transfer of mayoral duties to Ishraq. Protesters have also been calling for the resignation of Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiyan, an advisor to the Ministry of Local Government and the Ministry of Youth and Sports, declaring him unwelcome at the DSCC office.
The 2020 DSCC election, held on February 1, had declared Awami League’s Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh as mayor. However, on March 27 this year, the Election Tribunal of Dhaka, led by Joint District Judge Md Nurul Islam, overturned that result and declared BNP’s Ishraq Hossain as the rightful mayor. The Election Commission sought the law ministry’s opinion on gazette notification after receiving the verdict. Following that, on April 27, a gazette was published officially naming Ishraq as the new mayor of DSCC.
