The Supreme Court has scheduled the hearing for the state’s leave-to-appeal against the acquittal of all accused in the August 21 grenade attack case for Tuesday, May 27. The date was set on Monday, May 26, by a five-member bench led by Justice Ashfaqul Islam.

Previously, on December 1, the High Court acquitted all accused, including BNP’s acting chairman Tarique Rahman, in the murder and explosives cases filed over the 2004 grenade attack on an Awami League rally at Bangabandhu Avenue, which killed 24 party members and activists. The state filed an appeal against this verdict on March 19.

Defense lawyers remain hopeful that the High Court’s decision will be upheld by the Appellate Division. The original verdict by the trial court in 2018 sentenced former state minister for home Lutfozzaman Babar, former deputy minister for education Abdus Salam Pintu, and 17 others to death. Additionally, Tarique Rahman and 18 others were sentenced to life imprisonment, while 11 received various prison terms and financial penalties.
