U.S. Wants Peaceful Power Transition in Bangladesh

The United States wants to see a peaceful transfer of power in Bangladesh through a free and fair election, according to U.S. Ambassador to Dhaka, Peter Haas. On Sunday (June 22), during a courtesy meeting at the BNP Chairperson’s office in Gulshan, the ambassador shared this position in a discussion with BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.

 

Ambassador Haas also noted the recent meeting in London between BNP’s acting chairman Tarique Rahman and Dr. Muhammad Yunus, highlighting it as a sign of potential positive developments in Bangladesh’s political landscape.

 

The BNP delegation at the meeting included Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, a member of the party’s National Standing Committee, and Shama Obaed, the party’s organizing secretary.

 

Speaking to the media afterward, Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury stated that BNP has initiated legal actions against the country’s previous three Election Commissions. He also mentioned that the meeting with the U.S. envoy covered topics such as the upcoming national election, new U.S. tariff issues, and broader bilateral matters.
