In protest of recent reforms and demanding the removal of the National Board of Revenue (NBR) Chairman, revenue officials and employees across Bangladesh have launched a “March to NBR” campaign. On Saturday morning, large numbers of NBR officers from various regions gathered in front of the NBR headquarters in Dhaka, calling for inclusive reforms within the revenue sector.

In response, law enforcement agencies including the police, BGB, RAB, and Coast Guard sealed off the main entrance of the NBR building and took position inside, while security was heightened in the surrounding area.

The protesting officials accused the NBR Chairman of spreading misinformation instead of resolving the crisis. Simultaneously, a continuous shutdown has begun across all customs and tax offices nationwide.

Meanwhile, the Finance Ministry issued a press release on Friday stating that a meeting was held to address the deadlock at NBR. The meeting, held on Thursday, resulted in three decisions: the withdrawal of announced protest programs under the NBR Reform Unity Council, reconsideration of transfer orders, and a tripartite discussion scheduled for Tuesday.

Despite government instructions for all officials to resume work in the interest of national commerce and stability, the demonstrators defied the directive and continued their protest. On Thursday afternoon, leaders of the NBR Reform Unity Council had formally announced the “March to NBR” program through a press briefing.

The unrest stems from a government ordinance issued on May 12, which dissolved the existing NBR and the Internal Resources Division (IRD), replacing them with two new entities—Revenue Policy Division and Revenue Administration Division. This restructuring has triggered ongoing protests under the banner of the NBR Reform Unity Council.
